What is Micro TESE?
Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction (Micro TESE) is a highly specialized surgical technique used to retrieve sperm directly from the testicular tissue in men diagnosed with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA)—a condition where sperm production is severely impaired due to spermatogenic failure. Unlike standard TESE, Micro TESE uses a high-powered operating microscope to locate small areas of sperm production within the testis, increasing the chances of successful retrieval.
When is Micro TESE Recommended?
Micro TESE is typically recommended for men who:
- Have non-obstructive azoospermia due to genetic or hormonal conditions.
- Have had unsuccessful attempts with previous sperm retrieval procedures (e.g., PESA, MESA, or conventional TESE).
- Plan to undergo IVF with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) for conception.
Steps Involved in Micro TESE
- Anesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia to ensure complete comfort.
- Microsurgical Exploration: A small incision is made in the scrotum, and a microscope is used to carefully inspect the testicular tissue and identify areas likely to contain sperm.
- Sperm Extraction & Processing: The retrieved tissue is examined in the lab, and viable sperm are isolated for immediate use in IVF/ICSI or frozen for future cycles.
