FNA (Fine Needle Aspiration)

What is FNA?

Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) is a minimally invasive sperm retrieval technique used to extract sperm directly from the testicles or epididymis in men facing infertility. Using a thin, fine needle, small amounts of tissue are aspirated to locate viable sperm, which are then used for IVF with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) or preserved for future use. FNA is a quick, low-risk procedure requiring no incisions or stitches.

When is FNA Recommended?

FNA is typically recommended for men who:

  • Have obstructive azoospermia (sperm production is normal, but blocked from ejaculation).
  • Have undergone a vasectomy but wish to conceive without surgical reversal.
  • Have experienced failed sperm retrieval through ejaculation for IVF.
  • Require a diagnostic assessment of testicular sperm production.

Steps Involved in FNA Treatment

  • Local Anesthesia: The procedure is done under local anesthesia to numb the scrotal area and ensure patient comfort.
  • Needle Aspiration: A fine needle is inserted into the testicle or epididymis to collect a small sample of tissue or fluid.
  • Sperm Retrieval & Processing: The sample is analyzed for the presence of motile sperm, which can then be used for ICSI or frozen for future cycles.
