Ovarian Cysts

What are Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or within the ovaries. Most are benign and resolve naturally without treatment. However, some cysts can lead to symptoms such as pelvic pain, irregular menstrual cycles, or challenges with fertility. In certain situations, particularly when cysts are large or persistent, medical intervention or surgery may be necessary.

Common Causes of Ovarian Cysts:

  • Hormonal Imbalances
  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) / PCOD
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic Infections

Treatment Stages for Ovarian Cysts:

Treatment depends on the size, type, and symptoms of the cyst. Options include:

  • Watchful Waiting: Many cysts go away on their own and may only require routine monitoring.
  • Medication: Hormonal birth control pills may be prescribed to regulate the menstrual cycle and prevent new cysts.
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery (Laparoscopic Cystectomy): Used to remove the cyst while preserving the ovary.
  • Open Surgery (Laparotomy): Recommended for larger or complex cysts, or when cancer is suspected.
  • Oophorectomy: Removal of one or both ovaries may be necessary in rare or severe cases.
